TL;DR: From her family’s iconic Chicago restaurant to the historic villas of Italy (and everywhere in between), Michelle Durpetti has built a career around one enduring philosophy: extraordinary celebrations begin with how people feel.

There is a particular kind of hospitality that cannot be taught from a textbook. It is learned through experience, cultivated over generations, and expressed in the smallest of details. For Michelle Durpetti, founder of Michelle Durpetti Events, that understanding began long before she planned her first wedding.

As a third-generation leader of Gene & Georgetti, Chicago’s iconic steakhouse founded in 1941, Durpetti grew up immersed in the traditions of an Italian-American family whose legacy was built on entrepreneurship, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to hospitality. Today, she is helping guide that 85-year institution into its next chapter while simultaneously leading an international wedding planning and production company of her own.

It is an unusual intersection of two demanding industries, both requiring creative vision, operational precision, an instinct for understanding people, and the ability to deliver exceptional experiences consistently.

Since founding Michelle Durpetti Events in 2008, Durpetti has established herself as a respected voice in the wedding industry, building a full-service planning firm with offices in Chicago and Palm Beach and an extensive portfolio of celebrations throughout the United States, Mexico, The Caribbean, Europe (with a focus on Italy), and beyond.

Her professional story is also deeply connected to her heritage. With family roots in Lucca, a degree in Italian and Renaissance art history, and years spent living and studying in Florence, Durpetti brings an appreciation for history, architecture, culture, and tradition to her work. These influences are especially evident in the destination celebrations her company produces throughout Italy.

But perhaps what distinguishes Durpetti most is the perspective she brings to the planning process itself. Nearly two decades of producing weddings, combined with a lifetime spent in hospitality, have shaped an approach that considers beauty and execution inseparable.

“Beautiful design matters tremendously to me, but beauty alone is never enough. How a celebration feels, how it flows, and how people experience it are equally important. That is where hospitality and planning truly intersect.” — Michelle Durpetti, Michelle Durpetti Events

For Durpetti, building a successful company has never been simply about creating beautiful weddings. It has been about establishing trust, cultivating meaningful relationships, leading talented teams, and creating experiences that remain with people long after the celebration ends.

A Life Shaped by Hospitality and Italian Heritage

Durpetti’s relationship with Italy extends well beyond her professional work.

With family roots in Lucca, a degree in Italian and Renaissance art history, and years spent living and studying in Florence, she brings a personal understanding of Italian culture, architecture, history, and hospitality to her destination celebrations.

It is a connection that informs not only where she works, but how she approaches the experience of celebrating abroad.

For Durpetti, Italy is never simply a beautiful backdrop. Its traditions, regional character, cuisine, and extraordinary sense of place are essential elements of the celebration itself.

That perspective was especially evident during a recent three-day wedding weekend in Florence.

The festivities began with a rehearsal dinner for family at the beloved Cibrèo restaurant, followed by welcome cocktails for everyone. The festivities continued with a welcome celebration at Dimora Ghirlandaio that included an epic dance party. The wedding day brought guests to the historic Church of Ognissanti for the ceremony, cocktails at The Excelsior, and an elegant reception at The St. Regis Florence.

Each setting offered something entirely different, yet together they created a cohesive experience rooted in the character of the city.

“Our philosophy really aligned with our couples in that Italy was the destination, not the theme,” Durpetti explains. “We wanted guests to experience Florence, not a manufactured interpretation of it. The architecture, the history, the food, and the atmosphere already offer so much. Our responsibility was to bring those elements together in a way that felt authentic to the couple.”

It is a distinction that speaks to her broader approach to destination weddings: allowing the setting to inform the celebration without overshadowing the people at its center.

The Art of Creating an Experience

As multi-day weddings have become increasingly popular, Durpetti believes the most successful celebrations are those that consider the entire guest experience rather than treating each event as an independent occasion.

A welcome party should establish a sense of place and anticipation. A rehearsal dinner offers intimacy and connection. The wedding itself is the emotional centerpiece, while a farewell gathering creates space for the couple to reconnect with guests after the excitement of the preceding days.

“I actually love a post-wedding celebration,” she says. “There is something wonderful about seeing everyone the following day, when the couple can finally relax, take everything in, and really enjoy time with the people who traveled to celebrate them.”

But creating that seemingly effortless experience requires considerable preparation.

Transportation, guest arrivals, accommodations, vendor coordination, installation schedules, event transitions, and the practical realities of travel must all be considered.

For Durpetti, these are not simply logistical responsibilities. They are essential components of hospitality.

“When guests feel informed, comfortable, and cared for, they can be completely present. That is the goal. We want our clients and their guests to enjoy the experience without having to think about everything happening behind the scenes.” — Michelle Durpetti, Michelle Durpetti Events

It is also why her team approaches design and logistics as interconnected disciplines.

A breathtaking ceremony setting means little if guests cannot comfortably reach it. An extraordinary dinner design loses some of its impact if service is poorly paced. And the most beautiful destination celebration can feel overwhelming without time to appreciate the place everyone traveled so far to experience.

Every decision must serve the larger experience.

Transparency Is the Foundation of Trust

In an industry driven by inspiration, Durpetti believes one of the most important responsibilities of an experienced planner is helping couples understand the realities behind what they envision.

It begins long before the first design presentation.

At Michelle Durpetti Events, the planning relationship starts with an in-depth understanding of the couple, their priorities, the scope of their celebration, and the investment they are comfortable making.

Durpetti is particularly passionate about transparency, both in how her company structures its services and in how she educates clients about wedding spending.

“Most couples have never planned an event of this magnitude before, and there is no reason they should automatically understand everything that goes into it. That is our job. We have a responsibility to explain the process, the costs, and the decisions clearly so they can move forward with confidence.”

Her firm operates exclusively within a full-service planning model, with a planning fee established according to the scope and complexity of each celebration.

For Durpetti, that structure reflects the comprehensive nature of the relationship.

“We cannot partially give someone our expertise, our passion, or our attention to detail. Full-service planning allows us to be involved in the decisions that ultimately determine how successfully a celebration comes together.” — Michelle Durpetti, Michelle Durpetti Events

She is equally candid about the financial considerations of destination weddings, where taxes, transportation, staffing, accommodations, production requirements, and multiple events can dramatically influence the overall investment.

Rather than approaching the budget as an uncomfortable conversation, Durpetti sees it as an opportunity to establish trust.

“Transparency is one of the values I hold most closely. I would much rather have an honest conversation early in the process than allow someone to develop expectations that are not realistic. Our clients deserve informed guidance, and that means being willing to have conversations that are not always the most glamorous.”

It is an approach rooted in respect for both the client’s investment and the creative professionals entrusted with bringing the celebration to life.

Where Creative Vision Meets Meticulous Execution

Durpetti is drawn to layered, intentional design. She appreciates the transformative power of lighting, the emotional impact of a thoughtfully designed ceremony, and the way carefully selected details can make an environment feel entirely personal.

But she is equally passionate about what makes those creative moments possible.

Ask her to name one of the most essential tools in wedding planning, and her answer comes without hesitation.

“A well-built master timeline is a hill I will forever die on.” — Michelle Durpetti, Michelle Durpetti Events

It may not be the most romantic answer, but it reveals something important about her philosophy.

For Durpetti, creative freedom is made possible by preparation.

A comprehensive timeline connects the design vision with every operational component required to execute it, from vendor installations and transportation to photography, culinary service, entertainment, and the transitions guests may never notice.

It also provides the structure necessary to adapt when circumstances change.

“People sometimes think logistics and creativity are two separate things, but I see them as completely connected. You cannot execute an ambitious creative vision without understanding what it requires operationally. The preparation is what gives everyone the freedom to do their best work.”

That understanding has become particularly important as wedding designs grow more complex and celebrations span multiple venues and days.

Her approach is not simply to create something visually compelling, but to ensure it can be executed beautifully, comfortably, and with purpose.

The People Behind the Beautiful Moments

Nearly two decades in the wedding industry have also reinforced Durpetti’s belief that exceptional events depend on exceptional collaboration.

Her approach to assembling a vendor team goes far beyond admiring a portfolio.

Creativity and aesthetic compatibility matter, certainly, but so do professionalism, communication, reliability, and the ability to work collaboratively under pressure.

“I want our clients to have an incredible creative team, but I also want them to have people who genuinely care about their experience. Talent matters. So does integrity, work ethic, and the ability to show up for one another.” — Michelle Durpetti, Michelle Durpetti Events

For destination weddings, the considerations become even more nuanced.

For destination weddings, regional expertise, language, cultural understanding, and established local relationships are invaluable components when creating a team. This also includes sourcing vendors who may not be local but are the right fit, and then combining all of that into the perfect recipe for the client’s vision. Durpetti’s own Italian background and her team’s presence in Italy allow the firm to navigate the complexities of things like cultural mentality with an understanding that extends beyond traditional destination planning.

She also believes that long-standing professional relationships are built on mutual respect and honest communication.

The strongest partnerships, in her view, are not those that never encounter challenges. They are those in which everyone is committed to finding solutions and maintaining the standard of work promised to the client.

And when challenges arise during an event, her philosophy is straightforward: protect the guest experience, solve the problem, and address accountability afterward.

It is another lesson drawn from a lifetime in hospitality. “I am not interested in blame, I am interested in solutions.”

Experience Cannot Be Replaced by Visibility

Durpetti has embraced the creative opportunities that social media offers. She enjoys sharing the stories behind her events, highlighting her team, celebrating vendor partners, and offering an honest look at what goes into producing complex celebrations.

She is also quick to distinguish between visibility and professional expertise.

“Instagram views, going viral on TikTok, and clicks on YouTube do not make someone a good planner. Experience does. Attention to detail does. Understanding logistics, timing, and flow does.” — Michelle Durpetti, Michelle Durpetti Events

It is a perspective informed by nearly two decades of working with clients, navigating unexpected challenges, and developing the judgment that comes only through experience.

That does not mean she resists change.

In fact, Durpetti describes herself as enthusiastically “obsessed” about social media and curious about the ways technology can support her business.

She has incorporated artificial intelligence into certain administrative processes, while remaining committed to the traditional communication and organizational skills she considers essential.

“I still take notes in my Five Star notebook,” she laughs. “And now I might use ChatGPT to help transcribe them. A little old world, a little new world.”

For Durpetti, the distinction is simple: technology can support the process, but it cannot replace the relationships, experience, creative judgment, or personal accountability that define exceptional planning.

She sees similar opportunities for education when working with younger generations of couples.

Social media has made extraordinary design more accessible and inspiration more abundant than ever before. What it does not always reveal is the investment, staffing, preparation, and technical execution required to produce those moments.

Durpetti sees it as part of her responsibility to bridge that gap, helping clients understand the relationship between inspiration and investment without compromising their excitement or individuality.

“Every generation approaches celebrations a little differently, and I think that is interesting. But regardless of age, our responsibility is to listen, educate, and help people make decisions that feel right for them.”

When the Unexpected Becomes Something Extraordinary

If there is one quality Durpetti values especially in her clients, it is trust.

A celebration in Tuscany for Kayleigh and Tanner remains a particularly meaningful example.

Originally envisioned with an outdoor dinner at Villa Medicea di Lilliano, the wedding required a significant adjustment when weather conditions made the original plan impossible.

For a less experienced team, the change might have felt like a compromise.

For Durpetti and her creative partners, it became an opportunity to reimagine the experience.

Because the possibility had been considered well in advance, the team was able to transform the indoor space with suspended chandeliers, romantic Italian string lighting, lush overhead greenery, and an intimate layout that preserved the warmth and atmosphere of the original design.

The result was not simply a backup plan. It was an entirely beautiful experience in its own right.

“What made that wedding so special was the trust Kayleigh and Tanner placed in us. They allowed us to do what we do, to collaborate with our creative partners, and to make the decisions necessary to protect their experience. That kind of trust is everything.” — Michelle Durpetti, Michelle Durpetti Events

For Durpetti, the success of the celebration was not defined by whether the original plan unfolded exactly as imagined.

It was defined by how the couple experienced their wedding day.

The setting changed. The feeling did not.

A Legacy of Hospitality, and a Future Built with Intention

As Michelle Durpetti Events approaches its twentieth anniversary, its founder finds herself at a meaningful intersection of legacy and ambition.

At Gene & Georgetti, she is helping preserve and evolve a family institution that has been part of Chicago’s culinary landscape since 1941. At Michelle Durpetti Events, she continues to shape a company she built from the ground up, bringing her distinctive perspective on hospitality, design, and celebration to clients around the world.

Both roles require more than an appreciation for tradition. They demand leadership, adaptability, accountability, and the confidence to make difficult decisions while remaining committed to the values that established each business.

For Durpetti, the connection between these two worlds is not simply professional. It is personal.

Her Italian-American heritage, her family’s entrepreneurial history, and the lessons learned through generations of hospitality have informed the way she approaches everything from client relationships to creative collaboration and team leadership.

Yet she has also created something distinctly her own.

In an industry increasingly influenced by social media, rapidly changing trends, and the pursuit of visibility, Durpetti remains focused on the enduring value of experience, preparation, and human connection.

Her relationship with Style Me Pretty, including the publication of her firm’s Villa Gamberaia wedding in Florence in April 2026, reflects another important part of that philosophy: celebrating not only the finished result, but the talented creative community responsible for bringing it to life.

“Every wedding represents months of conversations, creative development, logistical planning, and the work of incredibly talented people. Seeing that work recognized is always meaningful because no extraordinary celebration happens in isolation.” — Michelle Durpetti, Michelle Durpetti Events

Nearly two decades after launching her company, Durpetti’s enthusiasm for the work remains rooted in the same principles that shaped her earliest understanding of hospitality.

Listen carefully. Communicate clearly. Respect the investment. Prepare thoroughly. Surround yourself with talented people. And never underestimate the importance of making someone feel genuinely cared for.

It is a philosophy that has connected generations of her family’s history with a career and company entirely her own.

And perhaps that is what makes her perspective particularly compelling. Michelle Durpetti is not simply preserving a legacy of hospitality. She is actively building the next chapter of it.

Because ultimately, the most memorable celebrations are not simply the most beautiful.

They are the ones that make people feel something.
