How Amorology Designs a Different World for Every Couple
Meet Heather Balliet, who with her husband Troy, has built Amorology from the ground up.
When Heather Balliet talks about Amorology, she talks about it the way you'd talk about a life, not a business. She and her husband Troy have run the San Diego design firm for going on 24 years, growing it organically alongside a team they clearly adore. As she puts it, they don't know anything else at this point, and that total immersion is exactly what shows up in the work.
Amorology is a boutique, design-driven firm catering to the luxury market, known for unique color palettes and concept-driven designs where each wedding becomes its own story and world. They're never creating the same thing twice, and they're not just following trends but trying to set them, pushing to up-level both their own work and the industry around them.
This is the story of how a family business builds singular, never-repeated celebrations, and what other vendors can learn from a quarter-century of doing it with intention.
Vendors Who Become Family
For Amorology, vendor relationships aren't transactional, they're personal. Heather describes the strongest partnerships as ones that build organically over time, when they connect with other artists who share the same love and passion for creating. They see those vendors as partners, treat them with respect and kindness, and aim to inspire them to bring their best work to the table.
“Our vendors, aside from our family, are who we spend the bulk of our lives with.”
When they find their people, the collaboration compounds. Getting to know vendors as friends is what lets everyone keep delivering their best work, at every level.

Connecting With Clients, Every Single Day
Elevating the client experience is a standing agenda item at Amorology, not a once-a-year initiative. The team meets often to ask what they can do better and how to apply the lessons from each event to the next one.
Their systems are strong enough that much of the foundation carries year to year, but they keep enhancing it. This year the focus has been on more human contact: more face-to-face and Zoom calls with clients, and a daily goal of touching base with every client while they're in the office.
“That as a team is always our goal each day, to make sure that we're connecting with each other in that way.”

Marketing as a Family, Not a Brand
When it comes to attracting aligned clients, Heather points to Instagram as the place where Amorology shows who they really are, not just as a team but as a family business. She wants potential clients to see their people, their values, and what motivates them, because the work is ultimately about families.
That visibility runs both directions. Amorology wants to get to know potential clients too, to make sure they align on design as well as on values and connection before they ever begin.

Authenticity and Promotion Aren't at Odds
Asked how she balances authenticity with promotion on social, Heather pushed back gently on the premise, and it was one of the sharpest points from any interview in this series. The two aren't mutually exclusive. When you promote the parts of your work that connect with you most deeply, the promotion is the authenticity.
“We promote with authenticity. That is the sweet spot. They're hand in hand.”

The Tools That Move the Needle
Like many of the best vendors, Heather's most valuable growth engine is word of mouth. Doing exceptional work for past clients turns them, and their friends, into future clients, and that referral pool has been the single biggest driver of the business over the years. As she puts it, there's nothing they love more than working with people that other people they love brought to them.
On the operational side, she credits the platform Aisle Planner for giving the business organizational polish.
“There's nothing that we love more than getting to work with people that our other people love, too.”

People First, Even in the Age of AI
For new vendors trying to break in, Heather's advice cuts against the tech-first moment: even with all the tools and AI available today, don't forget the business is people first. Network authentically by showing real interest in others and setting aside your own agenda.
Amorology isn't anti-AI, though. They've been dabbling with it as a tool to translate creative ideas into imagery, helping clients visualize how a design will come to life before it's built.
“Don't forget the business is people first, and it's about human connection.”
On the generational shift she's seeing, Heather notes that millennial clients tend to come in with a clear, specific vision and want to be involved in the decisions, while Gen Z clients are more exploratory, more open to taking the planner's lead, and more experience-driven.

Destination, but Closer to Home
Amorology are destination planners at heart, taking weddings across the globe and loving where the work takes them. Getting their hands on new venues and locations is part of what lets them dream big.
But Heather has noticed a clear shift in the last year or two. Couples still want the core appeal of a destination wedding, gathering friends and family in one place for a longer weekend, but they're increasingly choosing local destinations over far-flung international ones. Think a few hours from home rather than a long flight for every guest, with a lot of that demand landing in places like Mexico: destination in feel, without the trans-oceanic travel.
“People just want to come and stay with their friends and family and do a longer weekend.”

A Long Relationship With Style Me Pretty
Heather is warm about what Style Me Pretty has meant to Amorology, calling them huge supporters who have shared their work for years and brought them clients they genuinely love and connect with. She feels the brand's audience mirrors their own clientele, and that the platform has truly seen and honored their work.
After 24 years, a family team, and weddings around the world, Amorology's throughline is consistent: design something singular every time, keep your vendors close, and never let the tools get in the way of the people.
